Chaos Legion (カオス レギオン) is a third-person hack and slash video game developed and published by Capcom. The video game is based on of Tow Ubukata's novel of the same name.

As a Knight of the Dark Glyphs, Sieg is able to sacrifice lost souls in order to summon creatures called Chaos Legion from alternate worlds. When Victor Delacroix steals the forbidden Apocrypha of Yzarc, Sieg must track his former friend down and use his Legions to put a stop to his actions.

    Gameplay

The gameplay is similar games of the same genre such as Devil May Cry and Castlevania, in that it is primarily action-oriented. Numerous enemies attack the player in waves, and progress to the next part of the stage often requires defeat of all enemies in the area. The main feature that lends originality to the series is the addition of the Chaos Legion, which are supernatural creatures that fight alongside the player. While Legion are summoned, Sieg Wahrheit (the player character) is unable to run and has weaker melee attacks. Legion can be controlled to a degree: their tactics can be switched between offensive and defensive, and players can issue orders for them to attack immediately. While the Legion are inactive, Sieg can perform a sort of "special attack" called an Assist Attack which causes a Legion to appear and attack with him.

    Story

The story of Chaos Legion is a gothic opera which begins November 791 A.S. (Anno Satanis). The protagonist, Sieg Wahrheit (from the German words for "victory" and "truth"), is a Knight of the Dark Glyphs who is on a quest to find his former friend Victor Delacroix ("champion of the cross"), who has stolen the forbidden book Apocrypha Of Yzarc ('crazy' spelt backwards), and to stop him from releasing the spirit Azrail who will destroy the three planes of existence (the Nether World, the Middle World, and the Celestial World). In the beginning, Delacroix feels that Sieg was responsible for the death of his sister, and Sieg's lover, Siela Riviere, and is intent on bringing Sieg into a pure pandemonium that Delacroix himself has prepared as retribution not only for the sins of Sieg alone, but for the sins of the whole world. Delacroix refers to this armageddon as the "Purification of the World," whereupon he plans to use relentless hordes of hideous monsters to cleanse the world of sinners.

During his quest, Sieg encounters a member of "The Maidens Of The Silver" fighting a monster alone after other Maidens are killed. With Sieg's help Arcia Rinslett, the sole survivor, manages to escape death. At first, Arcia mentions that the Maidens of the Silver were in tough pursuit of Delacroix; thus, when she learns that Sieg is also searching for the same person, she decides to tag along. Later, it is revealed that Arcia has held a grudge against Delacroix for the murder of her brother.

Sieg never tells Arcia why he pursues Delacroix even though he does say the two knew each other. Because of this lack of trust, Arcia briefly loses her faith in Sieg and sets off to find Delacroix alone. Sieg eventually catches up and subsequently teams up with her once more after he consoles her. Sieg and Arcia meet Delacroix several times, each time to have a little more of Delacroix's plan revealed. Soon Sieg and Arcia meet Delacroix in the Hall of Chaos, the place where Azrail is sealed. Delacroix decides to punish Sieg first by killing Arcia with her own gun, since it seems that Arcia is close to Sieg. The murder fails, unbeknownst to Sieg who lashes out and attacks Delacroix because he believes Arcia to be dead. After subduing Delacroix, Sieg learns that Arcia survives the shot, only to find that Delacroix is not fully defeated. Surrouded in black aura, Delacroix attacks Sieg once again, but Arcia steps in between Sieg and Delacroix, with her arms outstretched. Instead of killing her, Delacroix regains his right mind, and a flashback takes place which reveals the truth of the past.

Several years before, Sieg, Delacroix, and Siela were ordered by the Order of St. Overia to reseal the demon Azrail. In reality, the Order planned to use Azrail's power for world dominance, but realized that Azrail was too powerful to contain. The demon resisted and decided that instead of being banished once more, it would possess a human: Siela. Delacroix tried to protect Siela but was possessed instead. In his uncontrollable rampage, he almost killed Sieg, but Siela withheld the mortal wound, and Delacroix drove his sword straight through her chest. When he came back to his senses, he believed Sieg had committed the murder. Siela's dying words to Sieg beforehand were: "Take care of Delacroix..." This is the reason why Sieg can't directly kill his friend.

Back in the present time, Delacroix decides to end his own life, much to Sieg's dismay. The only way to break Azrail's seal is to kill the person who last created the seal or perform a secret ritual sacrifice described in the forbidden book Apocrypha Of Yzarc. Delacroix breaks the seal by sacrificing himself. Azrail is then released and fights Sieg not only in its own demonic form but also respawned in the form of Dark Siela to intimidate him. However, Sieg prevails. After all the chaos, Sieg mourns the loss of his two best friends, but Arcia cheers him up and relieves him.

    Legions

    Sieg & Arrogance legion

Legions are an invaluable tool you must use against the forces of evil that you face within the game. By obtaining crests throughout the game's story, you are able to summon more legions (and more legionnaires for each legion) as you progress. There are 6 normal legions acquired during the course of the game. The 7th, Thanatos, is found by reuniting its scattered pieces found throughout the levels of the game (many of which must be revisited using the different abilities granted by the other six legions). Each has its own distinctive attack power, defensive power and abilities. Legions can be switched between Active and Passive modes in game while being summoned and disbanded at the user's will whilst he has enough energy in his 'Soul' bar. Legions can be upgraded using experience gained during a stage. Notably the Number of 'Souls' present for different legions differs when Sieg's soul bar is fully upgraded. Thanatos, for instance would be able to perform only 5 Assist attacks at a stretch, while Flawed, would be able to perform 60 Assist Attacks at a stretch. The total size of the soul bar, however, does not change.

These are the legions in listed order :

'Guilt' Sword Crest - An all-around legion with good offensive and average defensive skills that are good against most enemies. This legion is built around protecting Sieg with their multiple-hit combos, and assisting Sieg with his combos in order to deal more damage and reap the rewards of high-combo kills. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Dark Ripper' (lets you perform a 6-slash combo), 'Rising Phoenix' (an attack that sends the enemy into the air) and 'Ground Zero' (sets enemies on fire and knocks them away with a single strong hit) powers. Guilt is extremely effective against Organic creatures, but fares horribly against Metallic creatures.

'Hatred' Power Crest - An primarily offensive and lumbering legion that focuses on fewer hits, but with higher damage per hit. This legion is built for 1-on-1 battles, and you'll find that they may become easily overwhelmed while fighting large numbers of enemies, so using Sieg's own strength and using Hatred's defensive power is the best for these situations. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Breakdown' (sets enemies on fire by ramming the enemy) power. Hatred is extremely effective against Organic creatures, but fares horribly against Metallic creatures.

'Malice' Arrow Crest - A long-distance specialist legion that is excellent in sniping and long-range barrages but fails to be useful in close quarters combat. Malice attacks with its own will, but the player is able to enter 'Snipe Mode' to take direct control of their attacks; this consumes Soul energy per shot. Like Hatred, it is best to disband Malice as soon as enemies get too close as their defense is lacking. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Prisoner' (lock-on to an enemy then pull them towards you), 'Long Distance Lock-on' (doubles the lock-on range) and 'Spartan' (strikes, damages and pulls an enemy you've locked onto towards you) powers. Malice is extremely effective against Metallic creatures, but fares horribly against Organic creatures.

'Arrogance' Shield Crest - A defensive specialist legion that has extremely high defenses but no attack moves during normal course of actions. Only when a force attack is ordered does this legion attack. When so ordered, it releases the damage it absorbed while blocking. Arrogance comes in handy during boss battles and fights against more than one tough opponent but offense is mainly left up to Sieg when you call upon Arrogance, as it takes some time and effort to charge the legion to do significant damage. The amount of damage absorbed by Arrogance possesses a limit, the maximum being when the crest on the legions' back is a deep red, and the minimum being when the crest is white in colour.Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Avenger' power (counterattack with a series of lightning quick slashes, but requires precise timing). Arrogance fares well against all types of creatures, however, the damage dealt is dependent on the damage absorbed.

'Flawed' Claw Crest - A legion designed around quick attacks and agile movement, but can get overwhelmed easily. This legion is good at tactical attacks, and tricking the enemy to split up and become overwhelmed when separated. The Flawed legion also supports Sieg with quick attacks against his enemy to disrupt it and interrupt its attack pattern. Flawed comes in great when you need to attack the enemy quickly before they move or counter-attack, thus usually larger enemies. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'High Jump' (lets you jump 1.5 times higher than normal), 'Double Raid' (lets you jump twice in succession, allowing you to reach even higher areas) and 'Despise' (lets you break off your combo with a jump, hitting the enemy with an electrical attack). Flawed is extremely effective against Metallic creatures, but fares horribly against Organic creatures.

'Blasphemy' Bomb Crest - An explosive legion that deals high damage but at a cost. When Sieg summons Blasphemy it will proceed to fly at the closest enemy and self destruct, cutting a chunk from your Soul bar. This is a tricky legion to master, as it can accidentally waste Sieg's Soul energy; the ideal strategy is to use them sparingly by letting one legionnaire attack a large group of enemies or by letting the legion attack a strong enemy. It is also possible to use the special attack as an alternate strategy to conserve Soul energy, as Blasphemy lets you aim your bombs for extra damage. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Airblaze' (during a jump, Sieg thrusts his sword downward and creates an explosion after impact) power. Blasphemy fares well against all types of creatures, but is especially useful against Metallic ones. Blasphemy can also destroy some structures(gates).

'Thanatos' Ultimate Crest - The Thanatos legion is a large step above all the others with huge attack damage, good defense, and the ability to teleport around at will. Thanatos is unique in that unlike the other legions of up to 6 at one time, this legion is singular and instead evolves (rather than multiplies) with every upgrade. Thanatos into its own against the larger, slower enemies as it teleports away before they can counterattack. Its ability to manipulate time and its barrage of homing missiles is devastating against large numbers of enemies, and great against larger enemies with more health. This ability is called 'The Ignorant Masses'. The only downside to this legion is the very large amount of experience needed to evolve Thanatos to full power. Equipping this legion lets Sieg use the 'Healing Factor' (after standing still for a few seconds, your health begins to recover slowly) power. Thanatos is devastatingly powerful against all creatures, however, its true strength only appears in its Adult or Perfect form.

    Upgrades

In game, it is possible to increase the power of the legions at Sieg's command using experience gained in battle. There are 4 main areas for increasing a legion's power, namely :

    • Force: Upgrading this increases the number of legions when summoned.
    • Assist: Upgrading this increases the duration and power of the Assist Attack.
    • Enchant: Upgrading this gives the player the benefits of all special attacks granted by a legion, without having to equip the legion.
    • Attack and Defense: Upgrading this increases the Attack strength and Defence of that legion.

    Arcia

Arcia can be played if the player successfully beats the game in the normal difficulty. Arcia has a gun with three(can be upgraded to 4) bullet cases which she uses for combo. Her guns are infinite and fast, but almost weak. Her modes can be changed wether it is melee or ranged(with gun), her melee attacks are powerful kicks which can even blow an enemy away; in her ranged mode, hold the attack button and crosshairs will appear, giving you better gunning and tactic.

    Music

The music and soundtrack of Chaos Legion is composed by Hideyuki Fukasawa.
